To bury the dead is a corporal work of mercy.  Joseph of Arimathea donated his tomb to bury the body of Jesus.  Each time we show reverence for the dead we become like Joseph and honor Christ.

In St. Philip Parish, Bereavement Ministry includes the following works of love:

1.  The Legion of Mary recites the rosary in church before each funeral.  All are welcome to join with them in prayer.

2.  The Bereavement Group meets in the funeral home to offer its sympathy to the family.  In addition, members conduct a Vigil Prayer Service for the deceased.

3.  Adults volunteer to serve at the Funeral Mass.  They also function as sacristans, preparing for the Mass and cleaning up afterwards.

4.  Adults volunteer to read as lectors if family members are not available.  In addition, they prepare lectors chosen by the family when they arrive at the church so that they are able to proclaim well the Word of God.  They also give brief instructions to those presenting the gifts at the Offertory Procession.

5.  Cantors volunteer to sing at funerals.  If you are interested, please contact our Director of Music Ministry.

6.  In most instances, the family provides enough pallbearers.  But if volunteer pallbearers are needed, members of our parish Society of St. Vincent de Paul are willing to assist in this important ministry.  Please call the parish office.

7  The parish provides a liturgy planning guide for the family of the deceased.  Our local funeral directors assist family members in choosing the readings and sacred music.  We are grateful for their assistance.

8.  A Bereavement Committee coordinates this ministry and solicits volunteers.  If you are interested in joining, please call Kathy Hayes at 412-921-8102.
